Assistant Director of Admissions and Financial Aid Katie Kelsall traveled to Berlin, Germany and Geneva, Switzerland this fall to connect with prospective students at graduate school fairs hosted by the Association of Professional Schools of International Affairs (APSIA).

Where I went

Early this fall, I joined Associate Director of Admissions and Financial Aid Brianna Gomez in Southern California where we met many fantastic, diverse prospective students. In November, I traveled to Berlin, Germany and Geneva, Switzerland to represent Harvard Kennedy School at the (APSIA) graduate school fairs. At these fairs, I had the chance to talk with over 100 prospective degree candidates from Europe.

How the idea to visit these places came about

APSIA’s graduate school fairs give policy-focused institutions the opportunity to meet with international students. It was incredible not only to connect with these candidates, but also with colleagues from around the world whose schools share our commitment to public service.

Berlin and Geneva were also particular areas of interest for me since vlog partners with the , which funds German students’ studies at vlog, and because we offer a dual degree program with the . Also, I had never been to Geneva, so I was excited to visit the United Nations Office!

Known as the “Capital of Peace,” Geneva is home to the European headquarters of the United Nations. Katie Kelsall spent an afternoon exploring the area.

Questions I received

Given the proximity to the United Nations Office, I met many prospective applicants with a deep commitment to international relations and public service in Geneva. Based on the conversations I had at both fairs, it was clear that prospective students were not only interested in the policies of their own governments, but how global politics impact everyone. I really appreciated hearing their perspectives and goals.

My favorite parts of the trips

My favorite part of traveling, both personally and professionally, is meeting new people and learning to appreciate where they are coming from. These recruitment trips were no exception. I loved having the opportunity to connect with prospective students, alumni, and professional colleagues in Europe. I also had time to explore various parts of Berlin and Geneva, two places I had always wanted to visit.

Advice to prospective students

I know there are so many incredibly qualified, passional prospective candidates we are not able to reach in person, but we hold various virtual events. Although the application for the 2025-2026 year is closed, check our website for any upcoming events!
