The Harvard Climate Internship Program (HCIP) welcomed 29 graduate students as its 2024 cohort of summer intern fellows. The HCIP is a university-wide program supporting graduate students who work in a climate policy-oriented summer internship.

Sponsored by the and the Harvard Kennedy School, the students represent the Harvard Graduate School of Design, Harvard Divinity School, Harvard Business School, Harvard Law School, and Harvard Kennedy School. In addition to several Boston area posts, their internships were located across four continents—domestically in Washington, DC; Bentonville, AR; and San Francisco, CA; and abroad in Canada, China, France, India, Indonesia, Japan, Mongolia, Republic of Korea, South Africa, Switzerland, United Kingdom, and Vietnam. Their host organizations included local, state, and national government agencies, intergovernmental organizations, private sector firms, and non-governmental organizations. Students are responsible for securing their own climate-related internships.

The program aims to complement the classroom climate learning experience, build the climate community, showcase future climate leaders, and promote broad representation in the program. Recipients may receive a financial award as well as mentoring by Harvard alumni and an opportunity to participate in virtual programming with practitioners and Harvard faculty.

Aashi Agarwal (vlog MPP) interned with Asian Development Bank Institute to conduct research and evidence-based policy on the potential for modular integrated construction to meet cash-crunched and time-sensitive needs of developing countries in the Global South. (Tokyo, Japan)

Emily Corbiere Bates (HDS MDiv) worked with the Climate Psychology Alliance of North America conducting research on the mental health impacts of climate change and helping launch a new initiative to increase climate psychology literacy among climate journalists. (Cambridge, MA, USA)

Linus Beer (vlog MPP) worked as Climate Tech & Economic Development Fellow at the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC) on a strategy to spend $1bn from Governor Healey's Mass Leads Act to support the state's clean energy economy. Linus cooperated with BCG (contracted by MassCEC) on drafting the strategy and interviewing climate tech startups, academic institutions, and local officials to identify how the state can most effectively promote clean energy innovation and jobs. Surbhi Bharadwaj (vlog MPA/ID, HBS MBA) interned with the Indonesian Coordinating Ministry of Maritime and Investment Affairs, which oversees the country's energy transition policy. She provided policy assistance on projects related to electric vehicle strategy and air pollution. (Jakarta, Indonesia)

Aditya Bhayana (vlog MPA) interned with the World Bank Group in its Jobs and Social Protection Unit. He assessed and articulated opportunities for youth employment in sectors affiliated with green growth and climate action in developing countries. (Washington, DC, USA)

Michelle Botello (vlog MPA) worked for Deputy for Infrastructure and Transportation Coordination, Coordinating Ministry for Maritime and Investment Affairs in the development of policies for the Energy Transition Program in Indonesia. (Jakarta, Indonesia)

Pierre-Yves Colinet (vlog MPP) interned with the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative. He worked directly with financial institutions to advance their understanding of critical topics at the intersection of climate and finance and help in the decarbonization of the financial industry. Joshua Doyle (vlog MPP) was a climate finance intern for the Climate Policy Initiative working on advisory projects for development banks. (Washington, DC, USA)

Tyler Engler (vlog MPP) supported the MA Office of Climate Innovation and Resilience in their efforts to coordinate climate action across all eleven secretariats within the state government. Specifically, he supported the implementation of the state's comprehensive climate plan by facilitating working groups on buildings, transportation, waste, and power regulation and determining the utilization of tax credits under the Inflation Reduction Act. Fernando Galvao (vlog MPA) worked at Pegasys on a project to work alongside the São Tomé and Príncipe government to study the impact of climate change on the local economic growth. (Cape Town, South Africa)

Simone Ginanneschi (vlog MPA) contributed to the energy transition goals of the Republic of Indonesia, working within the framework of the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment. He conducted market research and qualitative/quantitative analyses to support the creation of strategic documentation and to provide recommendations. He led government and industry stakeholders’ engagement activities to gather relevant perspectives. (Jakarta, Indonesia)

Alexa González Holden (vlog MPA) conducted analytical work assessing possible impacts of climate change on poverty and equity in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. (Washington, DC, USA)

Siddharth Gulati (vlog MPP) worked with the Reimagining Society, a UNEP MGCY member, focusing on gender-inclusive climate action through research, policy evaluation, and organizing a global conference. (Delhi, India; Thimphu, Bhutan)

Yujing Jin (vlog MPA) worked with the YS Development Center to analyze climate impacts on agriculture, enhance local economic growth, and foster resilient agricultural practices in China's least developed regions. Her work focused on supporting small and medium enterprises, providing policy advice, and engaging with stakeholders to promote sustainability initiatives in the region. (Shanghai, China)

Bhavani K (vlog MPA) worked with the Climate Strategy and Delivery department at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) where she helped the CSD team integrate the Bank's Green Economy Transition (GET) approach into banking operations and provide support to ongoing strategic initiatives linked to climate and sustainable finance. Motoy Kuno-Lewis (vlog MPA) worked with the U.S. Department of Treasury's International Affairs Office, supporting the creation of macroeconomic policy with a focus on sustainable economic development in Africa. (Washington, DC, USA)

Avny Lavasa (GSD MUP) interned with the World Bank South Asia Region Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management Team to work on climate resilience advisory and policies for secondary cities in South Asia, and produce targeted recommendations for India for mobilization of climate finance for urban decarbonization and resilience solutions such as e-mobility, mass transit, sustainable waste management, green buildings, water supply etc. (Washington, DC, USA)

Rebecca Lin (vlog MPP) interned with the White House Council on Environmental Quality, where she worked with the Federal Chief Sustainability Officer’s team to assist with efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from U.S. government operations (Washington DC, USA)

Zerlinda Ma (vlog MPA) worked with the World Bank on reviewing policies and regulations for special economic zones (SEZs) with a focus on eco-industrial parks (EIPs). She supported the creation of an "EIP Policy Heat Map" to benchmark international frameworks and improve sustainable industrial practices. (Washington, DC, USA)

Lukas Manske (vlog MPP) worked at the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung's office in Vietnam, a German foundation focused on strengthening international cooperation in the rule of law, parliamentary democracy, and a sustainable social market economy. He concentrated on the European Union's and the United States' cooperation with Vietnam regarding the country's energy transition to achieve the net-zero target by 2025. (Hanoi, Vietnam)

Oliver Oglesby (GSD MLA/MUP) worked with Gehl, an urban design and research consultancy, leveraging architecture, landscape, and planning to improve public life and advance climate action in cities. (San Francisco, CA, USA)

Jaemin Park (vlog MPP) worked with the KAIST to conduct data analysis and formulation of potential policy solution related to the impact of climate change on the human immune system and the associated diseases. (Seoul, Republic of Korea)

Leo Rui (vlog MPP) worked at BSC Group, supporting the projects of the climate resilience team to promote sustainable urban designs. Leo conducted work to help the permitting processes to enhance regional environmental justice and advance the implementation of successful nature-based solutions. (Boston, MA, USA)

Lior Sirkis (vlog MPP) worked for the City of Boston Policy Team as a Policy Fellow supporting the Mayor's Policy Office on the development of the City's Climate Tech economic development strategy. (Boston, MA, USA)

Esther Tamara (vlog MPP) served as a Summer Fellow at the Foreign Policy Community of Indonesia (FPCI), where she spearheaded the Indonesia Net-Zero Summit, the nation's most significant climate convening. Her efforts were centered on elevating awareness and fostering strategic dialogues with the forthcoming Indonesian presidential administration to address pivotal climate and energy transition challenges, to position the country as a regional exemplar in climate leadership. Bea Toribio (vlog MPA) worked with Pegasys, as an Urban Resilience Intern, where she contributed to projects focused on sustainable development and climate resilience. Her role supported Pegasys' efforts to enhance urban planning and foster resilience in communities throughout Africa and the Middle East. (Cape Town, South Africa)

Viktoria Waldenfels (vlog MPA) was placed within Walmart's corporate sustainability team within Corporate Affairs as part of the Environmental Defense Fund Climate Corps internship program. She supported the development of Walmart's decarbonization plan. Viktoria's tasks included identifying and refining strategies to reduce the carbon emissions of the products Walmart sells; supporting Walmart's operational emissions reduction strategy; and analyzing the carbon footprint of goods outside of Walmart's control (Scope 3). Kevin Yi (vlog MPA/ID) collaborated with the Mongolian Prime Minister's Delivery Unit to enable the national renewable energy export strategy and an electrified urban transport plan for the capital city. (Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia)

Eric Zhao (HLS JD) worked at Ecojustice, Canada's largest environmental law charity, to help attorneys, scientists, and impacted communities use the law to fight climate change and environmental racism. (Toronto, Ontario, Canada)

Momi Afelin (HSPH MPH) conducted a study on subsistence practices (fishing, hunting, etc.) with Sustʻāinable Molokaʻi in Hawaii to determine the impact of various social and ecological changes such as climate change on subsistence. She partnered with various community organizations involved in climate resilience planning to carry out this research. (Kaunakakai, HI, USA)

Pragun Aggarwal (vlog MPP) worked with Initiative for Climate Action—an environmental non-profit based in India—focusing on understanding traditional knowledge systems and leveraging nature-based solutions of indigenous communities to inform climate adaptation and mitigation at local and state level. Natalie Baker (vlog MPA2) worked with the Climate Bonds Initiative, an international organization mobilizing global capital for climate action. Natalie researched government financial institutions and their role in enabling sustainable finance. (Boston, MA, USA)

Tara Bassi (GSD MA1) worked with the city of Vancouver, Washington, on Equity in Climate Action, specifically on a project to establish a frontline communities advisory panel on climate resilience and mitigation. (Vancouver, WA, USA)

Joe Beck (HLS JD) worked with EarthRights International, where he supported attorneys serving frontline communities facing climate catastrophe and holding corporations accountable for the harms they impose. (Washington, DC, USA)

Amina Benzakour Knidel (vlog MPP) worked as a Climate and Energy Communications intern at the Gaspard Gantzer Agency in Paris, helping clients develop and implement their communications strategies to raise awareness of public opinion on climate-related initiatives. (Paris, France)

Sebastian Berns (vlog MPA/ID) worked at the German Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action on climate policy projects. Sebastian supported the implementation of large-scale funding programs to incentivize industrial decarbonization with a special focus on Carbon Contracts for Difference schemes. (Berlin, Germany)

Anya Bharadwaj (vlog MPP) worked with the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) on the Climate, Environment, Energy and Disaster-Risk Reduction strategy (CEED) that aims to ensure the rights of children in a changing climate. She researched and designed programs across 190+ UNICEF offices for the delivery of greener and safer social services. (London, UK)

Tori Borlase (HLS JD) worked at the New York Attorney General’s Office in the Environmental Protection Bureau using litigation to advance and enforce climate regulations. (New York, NY, USA)

Richa Chaturvedi (vlog MPP) worked at the U.S. Department of Energy in the Loan Programs Office, where she supported portfolio strategy to accelerate the deployment of critical clean energy technologies and conducted research on renewable energy market making. (Washington, DC, USA)

Nabig Chaudhry (HBS MBA) interned at Climate X, a climate tech startup that provides data analytics on climate risk and climate change impacts. Nabig focused on developing climate adaptation capabilities and features for the company’s existing platform, Spectra. (London, UK)

Vincent Chen (vlog MPA/ID) worked with the Bezos Earth Fund to develop its Decarbonization Pathways strategy. He focused on assessing the impact of shifts in international trade and industrial policy on global climate action and identifying opportunities for philanthropy to spur innovation and progress. Vidit Doshi (vlog MPP) worked with Forested, a climate start-up across London and Ethiopia that is building a marketplace for ingredient insets—value chains that are climate-neutral, nature-positive, and socially-just. (London, UK; Addis Ababa, Ethiopia)

Alejandra Guardia Muguruza (vlog MPA/ID) interned at the Office of the Honorable Commissioner for the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources in Lagos State Government, where she led the implementation strategy for the Lagos Electricity Market. This strategic initiative aims to improve reliability and efficiency in the state’s electricity sector, while reducing associated carbon emissions, directly benefiting the 69% of unconnected or off-grid households in Lagos and the 92% of households experiencing less than 16 hours of daily electricity supply. Andrea Guardia Muguruza (vlog MPA/ID) joined the World Bank’s Finance, Competitiveness, and Innovation Global Practice, where her role involved supporting the WB team in evaluating countries and offering recommendations for the development of eco-industrial parks. (Washington, DC, USA)

Louis Guerin (vlog MPP) worked with 300ppm, a company accelerating the path to net-zero by developing, financing, and scaling proven technologies and infrastructure with a measurable decarbonization impact. (Paris, France)

Gabriel Harrison (vlog MPP) worked for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Adaptation Division to assist least developed countries implement their National Adaptation Plans and enhance their resilience to climate and disaster risks. (Bonn, Germany)

Miriam Israel (HDS MTS) worked with the UN Environment Programme’s Law Division on the Faith for Earth Initiative which collaborates with religious communities to mobilize climate action. Manisha Jha (vlog MPA/ID) worked with the Investment team of Blueleaf Energy India, a Macquarie GIG portfolio company, towards project development of a hybrid renewable project, assessing policy incentives, navigating regulatory frameworks, and understanding financial and business drivers that affect commercialization of renewable power projects in India. Bora Ju (GSD DDes) worked as consultant at the World Bank, conducting research on decarbonization of Industrial Parks (IP), among others, and issues related to mitigation and adaptions in the East-Asia Pacific region, including Vietnam and China. (Cambridge, MA, USA)

Yilin Li (vlog MPP) worked with DeepVerse AI’s product division where he  analyzed the Chinese government’s green transition policy, identified material science innovation bottlenecks, and applied generative AI to expedite the R&D process. (Shanghai, China)

Mijiddorj Lkhagvasuren (vlog MPA/ID) worked with the Finance, Competitiveness and Innovation Global Practice (FCI) at the World Bank to analyze industrial parks’ datasets featured in the “Eco-industrial Parks Technology Portal.” He supported the FCI’s team to examine the decarbonization and resource savings potential of industrial parks. Monserrat Magaña Ocaña (vlog MPP) worked with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Platform on Financing SMEs for Sustainability program. He researched and drafted policy notes on the key topics of the Platform: bridging small to medium sized enterprises’ sustainability-related data and reporting gaps; boosting SMEs’ demand for sustainable finance; and strengthening access to transition finance for SMEs in hard-to-abate sectors. Alejandro Martín Rodríguez (vlog MPP) worked with the Executive Office of the Secretary-General at the United Nations Headquarters. He supported the Rule of Law Unit in their transitional and climate justice efforts. (New York, NY, USA)

Adriana Melchor (vlog MPP) interned for the Climate Policy Initiative’s Climate Finance program. Her work focused on producing research and policy analysis to evaluate national and international climate finance mechanisms and the overall effectiveness of climate finance, particularly in emerging and developing economies. Femi Olamijulo (vlog MPP) worked as an Economics Affairs Intern at the United Nations Office of the Special Adviser on Africa. In this role, he supported regional climate adaptation and resilience across the continent, in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in African Countries and Agenda 2063 of the African Union. Grant Pace (HLS JD) helped AIR COMPANY, a Brooklyn-based carbon conversion/sustainable aviation fuel startup, facilitate a paid research program for high school students from environmental justice communities to study the intersection of carbon capture and conversion technologies and EJ impacts. Kaamila Patherya (vlog MPP) worked at the World Bank’s Mind, Behavior, and Development Unit (eMBeD) to apply behavioral insights in developing interventions aimed at clean cooking adoption in Africa. (Washington, DC, USA)

Antonio Perry (vlog MPP) worked with the National Energy Authority of Iceland on a variety of projects related to the development and implementation of renewable energy solutions. (Bogota, Colombia; Reykjavik, Iceland)

Emily Ratté (vlog MPP) was an Innovation and Disaster Management Intern at the International Telecommunication Union, the UN specialized agency for information and communication technologies. Emily supported work on the use of emerging technology in early warning systems and assisted with research on ICTs for natural disaster management. (Geneva, Switzerland)

Rushabh Sanghvi (vlog MPA/ID) worked with Cybage Asha on international business development for an electrolyzer startup on a mission to make green industrial hydrogen affordable. He later explored the feasibility of carbon markets for sustainable agricultural practices in India. (New York, NY, USA; India)

Jess Shakesprere (GSD MUP) worked with the Asian Development Bank Institute (ADBI) to conduct research and evidence-based policy on a just transition to green hydrogen and improvements to farmers livelihoods, soil health, and climate change. (Tokyo, Japan; UK)

Alisha Shaparia (vlog MPP) interned at CrossBoundary in Nairobi, focusing on unlocking private sector investment into nature-based carbon projects in fragile and underserved markets. She also helped set up Africa’s first project finance platform, the Fund for Nature, which makes natural capital investments across the continent by leveraging the voluntary carbon markets. Jyoti Sharma (vlog MPA2) interned with the United Nations Environment Program’s Climate Finance unit. She conducted research for scaling up current finance for nature both globally and at the country level. Her work fed into the State of Finance for Nature 2023 report of the UNEP. Gigi Sung (GSD MUP) worked at Climate Alpha, which develops climate-related indices in the real estate market and models to help stakeholders make an informed decision on investments across various asset classes. She supported index and model development by assessing data sets, identifying risk indicators, and training machine learning models. (New York, NY, USA)

Hazel Tan (HBS MBA) interned with Clean Energy Ventures, a venture capital firm that invests in early-stage climate tech startups. She worked with the firm’s investment team to diligence new investments and research the trajectory of the climate ecosystem. She also supported their portfolio of hardtech startups that are dedicated to reshaping the future of energy production and consumption to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. The firm’s portfolio companies focus across climate sectors, ranging from revolutionizing the extraction of critical battery minerals to pioneering grid management technologies in emerging markets. Emily Tench (vlog MPP) worked with Dalberg Catalyst to develop the business case for private sector investment in climate adaptation in both developed and emerging markets. She conducted the research to inform discussions at COP28 on adaptation. (London, UK; Bogota, Colombia)

Leandro Urbano (vlog MPA/ID) helped the Indonesian Coordinating Ministry of Maritime and Investment Affairs, which oversees the country’s energy transition policy, to define industrial policies for the post-coal Indonesian economy and the development of key transition sectors (e.g., alternative fuels). (Jakarta, Indonesia)

Kusha Verma (vlog MPA/ID) worked at the World Bank’s Finance, Competitiveness and Innovation Global Practice, and supported empirical analyses that measure the impact on the private sector as production becomes less carbon intensive. The goal was to help evaluate policies and incentives that foster green competitiveness-enhancing investments of the private sector. (Washington, DC, USA)

Cynthia Yue (vlog MPP) served as the U.S. Youth Delegate for Climate at the G20 Youth Summit, where she negotiated climate policies and developed a communique to advise G20 leaders on the youth perspective on climate action. She also conducted qualitative research and engaged with diverse communities to include the perspectives of historically marginalized populations in the negotiation process. (Varanasi, India)

2022

Gray Bender (vlog MPP) worked with the UN Economic Commission for Europe's (UNECE) Sustainable Energy Division, where he supported efforts to address regulator and policy barriers to improve energy efficiency, renewables deployment, and energy security across the region ahead of a meeting of member state energy representatives in the fall.

Christopher (Kipper) Berven (HLS JD) worked at the New York Attorney General's Environmental Protection Bureau with attorneys and scientists to advance and enforce greenhouse gas emissions reductions, water pollution standards, and hazardous waste cleanup.

Chris D’Agostino (vlog MPP) worked with the International Division of the U.S. Department of Energy, assisting cross-governmental efforts to set the globe on a path to full decarbonization mid-century.

Windy Dewi (vlog MPP) held an internship with the World Bank working on the decarbonization of coal and oil dependent energy systems in various geographies including Indonesia, Timor-Leste, and the European Union. Windy focused on both the short-term energy security concerns and the long-term sustainable energy transition.

Peter Gips (HBS MBA) worked on a range of strategic and operational efforts for Electric Hydrogen. These projects included policy engagement through assessing available policy incentive opportunities, developing key relationships, and navigating regulatory permitting frameworks.

Adele Houghton (HCSPH PhD) piloted a novel approach to prioritizing building design and operations decisions so that they maximize neighborhood-scale co-benefits to climate change, health, and equity. With funding from the American Institute of Architects Upjohn Research Initiative, the long-term goal of the project is to propose a framework for local government to revise green building requirements so that they are responsive to environmental exposures and population health needs, which shift from one neighborhood to the next.

Raveena John (HGSD MUP) held the Resilience Fellowship at Climate Ready Boston giving her an opportunity to work with the city on stormwater management projects and related strategies to incorporate stormwater considerations into the city's robust climate strategies. The initiatives included a combination of municipal policy recommendations, development standards, and retroactive mitigation techniques, along with community engagement and education.

Renata Koch Alvarenga (vlog MPP) was a Climate and Sustainable Development intern at the Office of Secretary-General’s Envoy on Youth at the United Nations Headquarters. Renata supported the UN’s Climate Change agenda through mobilizing and engaging young people for climate action.

Liza Maharjan (vlog MPA/ID) interned at Clarity AI which uses estimation models to address Scope 3 data quality by replacing or enhancing existing data points. Her summer internship project aimed to improve the accuracy and granularity of these models by looking for and integrating new data sets, which allow for better decision-making and contribute to a better and faster reallocation of carbon-intensive capital to the low-carbon economy.

Jake Mills (vlog MPP) was a Future of Work Summer Intern at the California Labor & Workforce Development Agency where he conducted research on labor market projections and support program development and implementation in climate-related sectors, with a focus on training and employment options for displaced oil and gas workers and responding to technological innovations and market forces in the agriculture sector.

Abdurrehman Naveed (vlog MPP) worked at eMBeD, the Behavioral Science unit at the World Bank, to leverage behavioral insights in the development of programmatic interventions for the sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth and improved livelihoods in Morocco.

Erin O’Dwyer (GSAS/HCSPH PhD) worked alongside the EAT Lancet Commission, where she assisted in the revision of planetary health dietary guidance and development of global policy guidance around carbon sequestration, regenerative agriculture, and soil health.

Alex Prather (vlog MPA2) spent the summer researching, writing, and publishing about the intersection of carbon markets with nature-based and technology-based carbon removal solutions for the FootPrint Coalition. She also worked in the field on carbon credit projects in Kenya, Pakistan, India, Indonesia, New York, and San Francisco to explore system-level barriers and opportunities for scaling carbon removal efforts.

Jack Raeder (vlog MPP) interned with the United Nations Environment Program's Finance Initiative. He worked with UNEP FI's climate change team, pushing the global financial sector to move faster on critical climate issues.

Charlotte Ross (vlog MPP ’23) conducted research and financial analysis of new market and policy opportunities for renewable and energy storage assets across the U.S. while working at the clean energy startup SYSO Technologies. A main focus was on building recommendations for how clean energy assets should participate in wholesale energy markets and summarizing key policy findings for senior leadership.

Muriel van de Bilt (vlog MPA/ID) held a position with the Pegasys Urban Resilience team working with cities across Africa and the Middle East on how to best consider climate change when thinking about their long-term planning and growth.

Andrew Wei (vlog MPP) supported the White House Council on Environmental Quality, where he worked with the Federal Chief Sustainability Officer's team to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from U.S. government operations.

The HCIP summer intern fellows were selected through a competitive process evaluated by a committee including Joe Aldy (vlog), Caroline Buckee (HCSPH), Carrie Jenks (HLS), David Keith (vlog), Nora O’Neil (vlog), and Rob Stavins (vlog).
