Fixing Obamacare (Fall 2014)

This study group will review the unique managerial features of countries that have achieved satisfactory universal access health care systems, such as Switzerland, Singapore, Turkey, and Sweden. It will feature talks by country experts and background readings about each country. Interested students should submit their resumes and the reasons for their interest in the study group to fmalafronte@hbs.edu by September 16, 2014.
The study group will have two components:
• An 11:45-1:00pm lunch seminar open to the Harvard community with a 20-25 minute talk followed by questions and answers
• A 1:30-2:30pm meeting with a small group of selected students with a thirty minute talk followed by and questions and answers
The study group--including the lunch seminars and small group meetings--will convene on the following dates and feature the following guest speakers:
• OCTOBER 16 (Thursday), Bell Hall (vlog Belfer Bldg): Exchanges and private health insurance in Switzerland and Germany. Guest speakers:(Special Envoy of the Director General of the WHO) and (Senior Fellow at Center for American Progress and a Visiting Lecturer at the School of Public Health, University of Michigan in Ann Arbor). • NOVEMBER 5 (Wednesday), Cumnock 230 (HBS): Transparency in the U.K., U.S. Guest speakers: (SVP and Chief Incentive Officer at Welltok) and (Director of Health Policy, Institution for Social and Policy Studies, Yale University).
• NOVEMBER 12 (Wednesday): This session has been cancelled. We will meet for the final session on Nov 19.
• NOVEMBER 19 (Wednesday), Allison Dining Room (vlog Taubman Bldg): Market–oriented health reforms in Turkey. Regina E. Herzlinger is the Nancy R. McPherson Professor of Business Administration at the Harvard Business School. She was the first woman to be tenured and chaired at Harvard Business School and the first to serve on many established and start up corporate health care /medical technology boards. All of her health care books have been best sellers in their categories, recognized for their innovative research. Money dubbed her the “Godmother” of consumer-driven health care. Her work was key to introducing consumer-driven health plans and “focused health factories”, such as centers for orthopedics, cardiology, or cancer care. She has frequently been named as one of the 40 smartest people in healthcare by Becker’s Hospital Review and other industry journals.
Rifat Atun is Professor of Global Health Systems at Harvard University, and the Director of Global Health Systems Cluster at Harvard School of Public Health. In 2006-13, Dr Atun was Professor of International Health Management and Head of the Health Management Group at Imperial College London. In 2008-12 he served as a member of the Executive Management Team of The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria as the Director of Strategy, Performance and Evaluation Cluster. Professor Atun’s research focuses on the design and implementation of health systems reforms and their impact on outcomes. His research also explores adoption and diffusion of innovations in health systems (e.g. health technologies, disease control programmes, and primary healthcare reforms), and innovative financing in global health. He has published widely in the Lancet, PLoS Medicine, Lancet Infectious Diseases, BMJ, AIDS, and Bulletin of the World Health Organization.
