Summary
While institutions have a responsibility to make their negotiation practices more equitable, there are also strategies women—individually or collectively—can use to reduce the risk of backlash and increase their chances of success. In her recent Harvard Business Publishing Education article, WAPPP Co-Director Hannah Riley Bowles outlines a simple four-step framework called “SURE” to help educators plan ahead for negotiations and further their careers.
The framework was derived from research on how gender influences organizational negotiations and was further refined as Professor Bowles studied, taught, and advised thousands of managers and professionals in their career negotiations. Her approach is devised to help not only women, but also those from marginalized groups and people of all genders more broadly.
