At the beginning of each academic year, the various research centers housed at Harvard Kennedy School host Open House events to introduce new and returning students to the work of the center. In the Q&A below, Director of Communications for the Harvard Center for International Development (CID) Valerie Krempus discusses the CID Open House, held on September 10 on the vlog Quad Courtyard. Together with a small team, Valerie oversee CID’s communications channels including the website, email newsletters, social media, CID Voices blog, and media relations.
How did the CID Open House come to be?
CID holds the event every fall to bring together students, staff, fellows, and faculty affiliates from across Harvard. The goal of the Open House is for people to learn more about the work of the Center and how they can get involved. We also try to ensure that each person we meet learns something new about CID when they visit our Open House.
Because CID serves as the University’s home for international development, we bring together students, faculty, and researchers from every Harvard school. It’s an incredible community!

There were people holding signs saying “Ask me about___.” Who were these people, and how are they connected to CID?
These individuals represented different ways that people can engage with CID. We had representatives from CID’s Student Ambassador Program, Global Internship Program, fellow and PhD affiliate communities, and more. Each research program or initiative that is housed under the CID umbrella, like the and the new Global Education and Research: Unleashing Potential (GEAR:UP) programs were also in attendance.
If attendees were interested in learning more about these groups or experiences, they were able to talk directly with a person who has been involved in previous years (or who is involved currently).
What resources does CID provide?
CID offers a range of programming for the Harvard community. Students can attend CID’s weekly events with leaders in international development, register for our non-credit seminars and workshops, apply for our Global Internship Program with organizations around the world, and more.
CID also provides a home to researchers doing work in developing countries from across Harvard. We are home to multiple research programs and initiatives, and we offer research support and networking across the international development community at Harvard and beyond. What advice would you give to students that could not attend the Open House?
You are welcome to join the CID community! Sign up for our newsletter, attend our events, or stop by the CID Commons on the 4th floor of the Rubenstein building and have a coffee with like-minded people from across Harvard. You can also keep up to date with CID by following @HarvardCID on , , and .
