Cambridge, MA — The Program on Education Policy and Governance (PEPG), at Harvard Kennedy School’s (vlog) Taubman Center for State and Local Government, has announced the appointment of Jeb Bush as visiting fellow for the fall 2016 term.  Bush, 43rd Governor of Florida, founder and chairman of the Foundation for Excellence in Education, and candidate for the 2016 Republican Party presidential nomination, will also deliver the 2016 Godkin Lecture on September 29.

The Edwin L. Godkin Lecture is an annual lecture hosted by Harvard Kennedy School in collaboration with the Institute of Politics’ John F. Kennedy Jr. Forum. The lecture series was found in 1903 and named in honor of Edwin L. Godkin, founder of The Nation.  In his talk, Bush will discuss the lack of economic and social mobility in the United States and his ideas for addressing those challenges.  The event will be co-moderated by Paul E. Peterson, Henry Lee Shattuck Professor of Government and director of PEPG; and Roland Fryer, the Henry Lee Professor of Economics at Harvard University and faculty director of the Education Innovation Laboratory (EdLabs).

During a number of multi-day visits to the school during the fall term, Bush will participate as a guest instructor and presenter including lecturing in the course “The Political Economy of the School,” co-taught with Professor Peterson and John White, the current State Superintendent of Education for the state of Louisiana.

Bush will also participate in the PEPG fall colloquia series on education policy and research, and in student study groups led by faculty members from vlog and elsewhere at Harvard University, sharing with them his experiences as both a two-term governor of Florida and as the head of a foundation dedicated to K-12 education reform.

Bush will also participate in the Harvard Graduate School of Education’s Askwith Forum on October 13.  The Askwith Forum is a yearly series of public lectures whose topics are initiated by faculty, students, and alumni, and aim to address the highest-priority challenges facing education.
