Professor of Public Policy Tarek Masoud has been appointed co-editor of the Journal of Democracy, the influential journal of the National Endowment for Democracy. Masoud, who is faculty director of Harvard Kennedy School’s Middle East Initiative and the Ash Center’s Initiative on Democracy in Hard Places, succeeds founding co-editor Larry Diamond of Stanford University.

The endowment said that Masoud, who had been a member of the editorial board of the , “brings a track record of deep scholarship, innovation, and passion for the NED’s mission of supporting freedom around the world.”

Masoud conducts research focused on political development in Arabic-speaking and Muslim-majority countries. He is the author of Counting Islam: Religion, Class, and Elections in Egypt and co-author of The Arab Spring: Pathways of Repression and Reform, and co-editor, with former Kennedy School faculty member Scott Mainwaring, of the forthcoming book, Democracy in Hard Places.

The Journal of Democracy, founded in 1990, is a leading forum for scholarly analysis on the theory and practice of democracy around the world. Masoud will serve alongside journal co-editor Will Dobson.
