Today’s data and digital landscape is not only complex, but rapidly evolving with the introduction of Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Cloud technologies. Every organization, big or small is grappling with how best to manage data to gain a competitive advantage, to disrupt, and be trusted. The public sector is equally facing challenges with demands for greater efficiency and cost-effectiveness in the delivery of programs and services, as well as setting regulatory frameworks and policies that allow for innovation while maintaining checks and balances in data sovereignty, privacy, and fundamental freedoms. Effective Digital governance and impactful leadership will be key in differentiating those who succeed versus those who struggle in the data-driven economy and society.

This course, focused on digital governance and leadership, is designed to provide mid to senior-level leaders who are either already working in the public sector, or those who interact with the public sector, theoretical knowledge as well as practical skills essential to effectively design and deliver digital solutions. The course uses lecture content, case studies, interactive discussions leveraging participant experiences, as well as the opportunity to dialogue with government leaders, delving deeper into factors such as data ethics, privacy, data stewardship, and impactful governance-skills and knowledge critical to navigate today’s complex public sector digital landscape.

The course will introduce students to world-leading data management frameworks; working forums that are bringing data and digital technologies to develop innovative solutions; key considerations in digital governance that imbed ethical considerations; and how to build institutional trust through effective citizen-engagement and transparency.

Students will be able to put their knowledge to practical use through the development of two case-studies, using live examples from their work-environment or experience, thereby being better enabled to deploy effective digital governance solutions and demonstrate impactful leadership.

This is a fast-paced course which will require 1-2 hours of investment in time and effort in mandatory reading before each lecture, enabling students to deepen their skills and discuss practical implementation during classes. Most classes will begin with an overview of the readings and key learnings, followed by facilitated discussions using practical examples that help students apply good governance and leadership attributes.
