Intended for those interested in the intersection between public policy and implementation, this course provides a broad overview of emerging opportunities, challenges and risks created by information technology in the public sector.  We begin the course by discussing the birth, evolution, and core practices of digital government. Next, we study the real-world impacts and lessons from digital government on shaping service delivery, government operations, and policymaking. We conclude with a peek into the future of this growing field and its role in shaping civic trust.

The course is a good introduction to digital practices in the public sector and involves a mix of traditional lectures, guest speakers from the field, preparatory readings and media content, in-class case studies and debates, and a final assignment. The goal of this course is to empower students irrespective of technical background:

  • to work within or adjacent to digital government teams, and
  • to imagine more equitable approaches to building things – products, programs, organizational culture, and policies – that better serve people.to imagine more equitable approaches to building things – products, programs, organizational culture, and policies – that better serve people.

Please note, students cannot take more than one section of "Digital Government" (DPI-662/662M) for credit.
