The Approaching Debt Limit Showdown: Does Catastrophe Loom? Photo

In just a few months, unless a gridlocked Congress acts, the US Government will hit its borrowing limit, with possible dire consequences for the US and world economies. Can we avert catastrophe? This hybrid seminar will be given by former Treasury Secretary and White House Chief of Staff Jack Lew and Harvard professor and former Chair of the President’s Council of Economic Advisers Jason Furman – both of whom were in the middle of past debt-limit crises. They will assess the issues, the politics, and what lies ahead. This event will be moderated by M-RCBG Research Fellow Robert Greenstein, founder and President Emeritus of the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities and Visiting Fellow at Brookings.

This event will be held in person in Littauer 140. Attendees may also join us remotely via Zoom. It is being co-sponsored by the Malcolm Wiener Center for Social Policy and the Institute of Politics at Harvard Kennedy School.
