Women's Leadership and Empowerment in Peace Processes in Post-Soviet Eurasia

The speaker's research examines wars and peace processes in post-Soviet states, focusing on conflicts in Abkhazia, South Ossetia, Nagorno-Karabakh, Transnistria, and Donbas/Crimea. Drawing on in-person fieldwork in Georgia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Moldova — where she conducted over 130 interviews — as well as ongoing (online) research in Ukraine, her study highlights the unique challenges women face in these high-stakes negotiations.

This research takes place against the backdrop of rising global tensions, particularly following the outbreak of war in Ukraine in 2022, which has intensified security concerns surrounding unresolved conflicts in post-Soviet Eastern Europe. By bridging theory and practice and providing essential local knowledge, the study aims to shed light on the barriers to women's participation in peace processes and the crucial need for more effective, sustainable, and inclusive negotiations in the post-Soviet region and beyond.
