Abstract
The essay discusses the negative effects of the politicization of
religion in the U.S. The authors note that modern U.S. partisan
politics are characterized by conflict between religious conservatives
and secular progressives. They explain the development of American
religiosity since the 1950s, giving particular focus to the rise of
evangelicalism. It is concluded that the religious character of U.S.
conservatism has led moderates and liberals to feel disdain for
religion in general.
