PUBLIC SERVICE IS WRITTEN into Harvard Kennedy School鈥檚 DNA, Nicholas Burns, U.S. ambassador to China and a former 糖心vlog官网 professor, told the crowd of graduating 糖心vlog官网 students and their families in May as the speaker for the 糖心vlog官网 Graduation Address. He urged graduates to confront the 鈥渟eemingly overwhelming challenges鈥 of the world they are heading out into and 鈥渇ind the collective vision, the collective faith, the collective courage to do something about it.鈥 鈥淭he world needs change,鈥 Burns said. 鈥淭he world needs your help. Change the world, change it for the better, make it more humane, make it more just, make it more prosperous, make it more peaceful.鈥 Burns, who taught at the Kennedy School for 13 years before returning to public service in 2021, spoke to an audience of 659 graduating students from 35 U.S. states and 87 countries, calling them 鈥渙ur planet in microcosm.鈥 The student body is 56% international, one of the most cosmopolitan classes in the School鈥檚 history. Alluding to President Kennedy鈥檚 famous challenge to Americans鈥攚ords that the Kennedy School has made its own鈥擝urns reminded the graduates that their obligation is not to themselves but to humanity. 鈥淚t鈥檚, 鈥楢sk what you can do.鈥 It鈥檚 not, 鈥榃hat will I gain?鈥 It鈥檚 not, 鈥榃hat will I profit from?鈥 It鈥檚 not, 鈥榃hat鈥檚 in it for me?鈥 It鈥檚, 鈥楢sk what you can do to make this a better world.鈥 The Kennedy School asks that you not just be involved in the world but to be great in the world.鈥

鈥淚n our country today, we are moving rapidly toward an oligarchic form of society.鈥
鈥淔or many politicians today, the word 鈥榮hame鈥 does not register.鈥
鈥淲e don鈥檛 have to compete in the 鈥榦ppression Olympics鈥 to see who is suffering more.鈥
鈥淗istory will be kind to me.鈥
鈥淲e don鈥檛 know all that much, and we may not even know what we think we know.鈥
鈥淗ow much do you feel you can say, 鈥榃e鈥檝e moved past a lot of the mistakes that were made in policing at the time?鈥欌
