Jean Van den Eynde MPA writes, 鈥淚n active (two words indeed!) retirement, with some small consulting assignments (in the arts and NFP sphere), coffee and lunches with former clients who look for a sounding board, theater and concerts we can enjoy without having to rush after work, and time for helping children and grandchildren ... I walk two grandsons to school and pre-school every morning. And a building project鈥攚hen most friends our age move from a house to an apartment, we have decided to build a new house (in the city of Brussels) with a smaller house next to it ... so as to be able, in a few years, to welcome one or two persons who can help us stay out of a retirement home for a few more years.鈥

Grace Flores-Hughes MPA writes, 鈥淢y book The Opaque Conspiracy was published last summer by Leaders Press. It is fiction based on true events about modern-day corruption and greed. My first book, A Tale of Survival, is an award-winning memoir. Governor Youngkin of Virginia appointed me to the Virginia Humanities Board and The Board for Professional & Occupational Regulation, of which I serve as chair. A hearty shoutout to my remaining 1980 MPA/MPP classmates!鈥

 

1981

Ed Edelson MPA recently became a candidate for Connecticut General Assembly. After almost 10 years out of electoral politics, he decided to take up a challenge to be the first Democrat elected to his district in over 70 years. Ed was former first selectman of Southbury, CT, and the first Democrat ever to get reelected in the town. Time to make history again. Deborah McFarlane MPA and Wendy L. Hansen are the authors of Regulating Abortion: The Politics of US Abortion Policy, published this year by Johns Hopkins University Press. Nearly one in four American women will have an abortion. This book explores the historical development of state abortion regulations since Roe v. Wade and provides important insights on the Dobbs decision, including how it amplifies disparities among states. It also offers a comparative exploration of abortion regulation in Western Europe. Ned Daly MCRP writes, 鈥淚 am pleased to announce that my seventh short film 鈥楾he Albacore Club鈥 (2024) has had its world premiere at the Orlando (Florida) International Film Festival. This short narrative was developed from a short story I wrote in 2019 for the A.J. Liebling Invitational Short Fiction Conference and was shot on location in Massachusetts. Location sound was recorded and mixed by Tim Carey (husband of Ruth Carey MCRP 1983). The boom operator was their son, Will Carey. Italian subtitles were created by Gastone Ave MCRP 1983.鈥

 

1984

Juan Humberto Young MPA writes, 鈥淓mbarking on a new journey鈥攕o many years after my graduation! My new book, Mindfulness-based Strategic Awareness Training 鈥 MBSAT (Wiley Blackwell, 2023), presents a radically new approach to decision making based on computational neuroscience and the Free Energy Principle. The momentum has inspired me to build the MBSAT Retreat Center for active people in Boquete, the beautiful, mountainous place in Panama known for its pleasant climate and world-famous coffee. Brett Doney MPP was recognized with the Jeffrey A. Finkle Organizational Leadership Award from the International Economic Development Council and made an honorary life member. The CDFI that Brett has led since 2006, the Great Falls Montana Development Alliance, was named the Distinguished Development Finance Local Agency of 2023 by the Council of Development Finance Agencies.

 

1985 | 40th Reunion

Ken Davies MC/MPA and Margrethe live on their vanilla and vegetable farm along the Nile River in Jinja, Uganda, where they settled nine years ago when Ken retired from the U.N. WFP. Ken would love to hear from classmates and can also happily offer a bed for the night in Jinja to any 糖心vlog官网 alumni who may be passing through Uganda.

Jim Shultz MC/MPA writes, 鈥淎 good deal of my work these days involves the Democracy Center鈥檚 advocacy training and support projects around the world鈥攋ust back from work with nine UNICEF country teams in South Asia and East Asia. I am also putting the final touches on my next book, Lessons from a Small Town (SUNY Press), an expansion of my recent articles in the New York Review about a liberal living and writing in Trump Land. But my best job is being 鈥楪apa鈥 to our lovely granddaughters who live just across the street from us here in Lockport, New York.鈥

Nadine Hack MC/MPA, CEO beCause Global Consulting and first female Executive in Residence at IMD Business School, was featured in Sustainable Food for the Globe magazine. She was also featured in the 鈥淐reating an Impact鈥 podcast and Take the Lead鈥檚 Power to Change Stories blog. She led the Advancing Women鈥檚 Rights鈥 online global forum, was chief speaker at the Social Justice and Sustainability Summit, and hosted a Global Citizens Circle with New York Times bestselling author and former child soldier Ishmael Beah and peace-builder Libby Hoffman in a discussion on the transformative journey of finding peace. She is a regular Forbes Councils contributor whose latest article is titled, 鈥淲orking Together Can be Powerful.鈥

David Wohl MC/MPA writes, 鈥淢y development company, Newport SW, recently opened its second affordable apartment project in Tucson, Newport at the Rodeo. With 77 units for low-income families, it was fully leased within three months of opening. We start construction on a 72-unit affordable senior project this summer. Everything we do uses the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit, which was enacted during our time at 糖心vlog官网 and was the subject of the case study for my real estate development class. The lessons of that course certainly sank in!鈥

Barbara Zadina MPP writes, 鈥淚鈥檝e gone back to the tech world handling PR for Electra.aero, a startup that has developed the first electric short takeoff and landing (eSTOL) aircraft. It鈥檚 clean, quiet, and needs just 150 feet to take off and land, meaning it has the flexibility of a helicopter but with the greater safety and costs of a fixed-wing aircraft. We鈥檙e in early test flights now, with expected commercial operations of a 9-pax plane in 2028. Electra is a solution for decarbonizing aviation (the dirtiest mode of transport) while bringing air travel to underserved markets around the globe. Victor Caabral MC/MPA writes, 鈥淚 returned to California after a 30-year career in Washington, D.C. In D.C. I served as counsel to the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, chief counsel to a member of the Merit Systems Protection Board, vice president of public policy and government affairs for Verizon Communications, and senior counsel for NBCUniversal-Telemundo. I currently serve as mayor of San Clemente, California, a beautiful beach town located in Orange County.鈥

Linda Killian MC/MPA earned her doctorate in American history in May 2024 at American University in Washington, D.C. Her PhD dissertation is titled 鈥淏enjamin Franklin and Thomas Paine: Their Lost Democratic Vision鈥 and explores the important ideological and personal connections between these two essential founders along with their political ideas. She plans to turn it into a book in time for the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States in 2026 and believes it will put Franklin and Paine and their shared ideas about a more democratic government for this country into the national discussion about the nation鈥檚 founding principles.

Dan Murrey MPP writes, 鈥淎fter six years at SCA Health, most recently serving as chief physician executive, I was recently named chief medical officer of Optum Health. In my new role I will be responsible for all aspects of clinical quality, enhancement of our care delivery environment, and advancement of value-based care across our enterprise.鈥

Reuven Carlyle MPA writes, 鈥淎fter 14 years as a state legislator and chair of the state Senate Environment, Energy & Technology Committee, I鈥檓 proud that Washington is the only state in the U.S. with binding, enforceable commitments to the Paris Agreement. I passed cap & invest carbon pricing, 100% clean energy, and much more. I left the legislature to start Earth Finance, a new climate strategy and finance firm. My passion has been to live at the intersection between the public and private sector for climate action. My wife, Wendy, and I have fabulous and joyous children (17-26). Onward!鈥

Clifford Garstang MC/MPA has published a sixth book of fiction. The Last Bird of Paradise is a blended historical and contemporary story about art, terrorism, and corruption, with a generous splash of romance. The novel is set in Singapore, where Clifford worked for a U.S. law firm for many years.

Gary Stahl MPA writes, 鈥淚 have retired from the U.N. and am living in the Washington, D.C., area with my family. I am still consulting on public-private partnerships and developing a jewelry business as a side gig.鈥

Patricia Welsh MPA writes, 鈥淎fter 25 years of federal service with the U.S. Small Business Administration and IRS Criminal Investigation, I retired from my work as a public affairs officer on December 30, 2023. I鈥檝e finally found time to connect with the Harvard Club of Central Ohio and am doing enjoyable activities like ceramics and knitting, and am planning some upcoming travels. I don鈥檛 miss the deadlines at work at all, although I do miss my colleagues at IRS Criminal Investigation. Fatimah Gilliam MPP is excited about her new book, Race Rules - What Your Black Friend Won鈥檛 Tell You. Jay Kleiman MC/MPA has published a new book titled Art of the Heart: The Doctor-Patient Relationship. In it, Jay, who is a cardiologist, focuses on the continuing need to preserve humanity in patient care even as technology and corporatization rapidly advance.

Jay Olson MPA writes, 鈥淚n June, NYC Comptroller Brad Lander named me to be deputy comptroller for public finance. It鈥檚 been quite an adjustment leaving the only job I鈥檝e had since graduating 糖心vlog官网 in 1998 but I鈥檓 pleased to be able to continue working in public service for NYC. Veronica Loewe Mu帽oz MC/MPA writes, 鈥淚 keep working as R+D+i project leader at the Chilean Forest Institute (INFOR) and as principal investigator at the National Center of Excellence for the Wood Industry (CENAMAD). Recently, I was awarded funds from the most prestigious science agency (FONDECYT) to study the impact of the soil microbiome on the performance of pure and mixed plantations, to improve forestry; indeed, mixed plantations are receiving attention because they provide more goods and services than monocultures, foster self-regulation, and have the ability to better cope with climate change. I live in Santiago with my husband, son, and mother, and enjoy two grandsons.鈥

Amy Bantham MPP has published her first book, Move to Live More. A guide for parents, caregivers, teachers, and coaches to help kids move more and feel better, it offers 50-plus tips and 50-plus takeaways on how and why kids need to move for better physical health, mental health, and academic development. It features 20 thought leaders in the physical activity and youth sports space, and 20 innovative solutions for getting kids moving before school, in school, after school, and on the weekends. The book was the #1 new release in children and exercise on Amazon when it released in March 2024.

 

2002

Edita Tahiri MC/MPA writes, 鈥淕reetings to all! I am focused on publishing my three books I have written: the first one is titled International Statebuilding in Kosovo, soon to be published. I also am writing memoirs of my struggle for freedom and independence of my nation Kosovo, but am also active in media to help better democracy and governance in my country and on women鈥檚 empowerment, given my role as the chair of the Regional Women鈥檚 Lobby in South East Europe (RWLSEE): rwlsee.org.鈥

Vuk Jeremic MPA/ID writes, 鈥淎fter stepping down from all public functions in Serbia, I became the professor of practice in international relations and diplomacy at Sciences Po Paris School of International Affairs, as well as a senior advisor to Project Associates, a UK-based global strategic advisory firm. I鈥檓 also the president of the global public policy think-tank Center for International Relations and Sustainable Development (CIRSD), and the editor-in-chief of Horizons, a quarterly journal of international relations and sustainable development, the only such publication from Southeast Europe that is available on JSTOR.鈥

Matthew Kohut MC/MPA writes, 鈥淚鈥檓 happy to share that Georgetown University Press is publishing Speaking Out: The New Rules of Business Leadership Communication in September. Manuel Almazan MPA, after almost 20 years of public service, has joined the private sector and started up a new firm called 鈥淗az+ Financial Services,鈥 which has been growing at a steady annual rate of more than 30% since its founding in 2019.

Stephen Frost MPP writes, 鈥淚 have moved to chair of the DEI and ESG consultancy Included.com and appointed Michelle Sequeria as my successor in the CEO role. This will allow me more time to focus on the business, rather than just in the business, at a critical time in our evolving attitudes to ESG and corporate governance.鈥

Andrew Leigh PhD has published The Shortest History of Economics, which explores the hidden economic forces behind war, innovation, and social transformation. With cover blurbs from Claudia Goldin, Caroline Hoxby, and Betsey Stevenson, the book traces how capitalism and the market system emerged, and introduces the key ideas and people who shaped the discipline of economics. Andrew is an assistant minister in the Australian government, and lives with Gweneth and their three sons in Canberra.

Zachary Miller MC/MPA was confirmed by the U.S. Senate for promotion to the rank of brigadier general. He currently commands the U.S. Army鈥檚 Joint Modernization Command.

Clare Sanford MPP writes, 鈥淎fter a year-delay due to medical misadventures, I fulfilled my 30-year-plus dream of becoming a firefighter. We had a house fire in the middle of the night when I was 12. I鈥檇 never been so grateful to see anyone as I was those firefighters. When allowed back in the house there were tons of them milling around, and I noticed one woman. It stuck out both that there was a woman, and that there was only one. Ever since I鈥檇 wanted to try and pay it forward, and show another girl at 3 a.m. that this could be for her, too. Just took me a bit of time! Unfortunately for my colleagues, firefighting will be nights/weekends. Keeping the day job as a lobbyist for child care quality and affordability.鈥

John Leggieri 糖心vlog官网EE is retiring from his position as principle at Cornerstone Government Affairs after a rewarding 10-year career with the firm. John led the firm鈥檚 national security practice, providing leadership, strategic counsel, and innovative solutions for a wide variety of clients in that sector. Over John鈥檚 tenure, Cornerstone grew into a top-3 ranked government relations firm in Washington, D.C. Fall of 2024 also marks the 10th anniversary of John鈥檚 retirement from the United States Army, following a 30-year career. John says he is now 鈥渓ooking forward to honing his skills as a gentleman farmer and traveling to exciting worldwide destinations鈥 with his wife, Becky.

 

2009

Osei Bonsu Dickson 糖心vlog官网EE writes, 鈥淚 have just been named among the Top 50 Global Thought Leaders and Influencers on Security by Thinkers360 and my training at Harvard Kennedy School has contributed to this special honor. Fifteen years after leaving the Kennedy School, only last week I received notice that I have also been named as the 2024 Harvard Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society Honorary Guest Speaker. I will be speaking on April 17, 2024, at Harvard Law School on the topic 鈥淭he Global South, Geopolitics, U.S., Europe, and China鈥檚 Competition to Influence Global AI Regulation.鈥 I wish to thank NIS/糖心vlog官网EE 2009 and Lt. Gen. Tad Oelstrom, former director of the National Security Program at the Kennedy School, who graciously wrote the foreword to my third book, Dickson on Principles of Security Law (Icon, 2016).鈥

Fabio Daneri MC/MPA has created a website, fabiodaneri.net, with 100-plus ideas in development economics and environment. The objective is to help solve global challenges in areas such as world peace, sustainable development, and environment. While the focus is on developing countries, many of the ideas can be applied in advanced countries as well.

David Holden MC/MPA writes, 鈥淪treeter and I are moving to New York City with my shiny new HDS MDiv. I will start a clinical residency in spiritual care at New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center later this summer.鈥

Nora Nickum MPP is the author of This Book is Full of Holes: From Underground to Outer Space and Everywhere In Between, a nonfiction picture book illustrated by Robert Meganck and published by Peachtree Publishing in spring 2024. A Junior Library Guild Gold Standard selection, this quirky book explores everything from sinkholes and potholes to wiffle ball holes and sound holes in musical instruments.

Carrie Sheffield MPP released her book Motorhome Prophecies on March 12. Publisher Hachette Book Group states, 鈥淚n the vein of Educated and Hillbilly Elegy comes a young woman鈥檚 memoir chronicling her harrowing journey from despair to salvation that showcases the depths and resilience of the human spirit and empowers readers on their own paths toward healing, forgiveness, and redemption. 鈥 She evolved from a scared and abused motorhome-dwelling girl to a Harvard-educated professional with a passion for empowering others to reject the cycles of poverty, depression, and self-hatred.鈥 Publishers Weekly calls it 鈥渁 searing memoir鈥 of a journey that is 鈥渉ard to forget鈥 and 鈥渞eaders will be riveted.鈥

2011

Ruth Torres MC/MPA is working at Brown University as the tribal community member in residence. She is part of the Native American and Indigenous Studies Initiative鈥檚 staff. Primarily a student support position, her work is funded through a Mellon Foundation grant, which also enabled Brown to establish a concentration in Critical Native American and Indigenous Studies (CNAIS). Ruth was happy to be at commencement where the inaugural cohort of CNAIS concentrators received their degrees. She and her husband continue to make their homes in Connecticut and Puerto Rico.

Pita Limjaroenrat MPA writes, 鈥淔inally turned 糖心vlog官网 education into political reality by winning the 2023 national election in Thailand. Formed a 312/500 coalition government but got blocked by the appointed upper house. Still very content with what I had achieved with my fellow Thais. Now a parliamentarian at risk of losing my mandate from constitutional court ruling but again fighting tooth and nail to keep my political rights alive for the betterment of Thailand, ASEAN, and beyond!鈥

 

2012

Peter Thompson MC/MPA recently earned a Doctor of Business Administration degree from Temple University with a focus on emergency management. Peter writes, 鈥淒uring the course of my studies, I researched the practice and state of emergency management in the U.S. by speaking to leaders in cities around the U.S. Related to this milestone, I also recently became the head of government affairs, U.S., for the Harvard Alumni Disaster Preparedness and Response Team, a global SIG of passionate practitioners from various disciplines. I also recently founded and became CEO of SignatureSoft Intelligence LLC, focused on bringing the advantages and advances of AI and machine learning to the emergency management profession and beyond.鈥

 

2013

Leila El-Khatib MC/MPA writes, 鈥淗ello, amazing 糖心vlog官网 alums! Since graduating, I returned to Canada to work in the public service and served on the 糖心vlog官网 Alumni Board for a four-year term. In 2021, I founded the government of Canada鈥檚 first Muslim Federal Employees Network. It has now become one of the largest public service employee networks and plays a key leadership role in supporting the government of Canada to become a model of inclusion of Muslim public servants. I continue to guide the network鈥檚 activities in addition to my full-time job as a public service executive. As part of the network鈥檚 consultative function, I support senior leaders on issues and policies impacting Muslim federal employees. Feel free to reach out!鈥

Rahul Kalita MPA co-founded an education technology startup called Tutored by Teachers (TbT). TbT is a mission-driven public benefit corporation that now serves over 15,000 kids across the country with high-quality instruction and tutoring. Eighty percent of students they serve are people of color.

Mariama Kabia MPP is the digital equity accelerator lead, social impact, at HP Inc. Her team at HP was named TIME magazine鈥檚 inaugural Team of the Year. From TIME: 鈥淭he social impact team at HP has the ambitious goal of accelerating digital equity for 150 million people by 2030鈥攆ocusing on providing education, health care and economic opportunities for underserved communities around the world. With dedication, passion and agility, they are well on their way to achieving it.鈥

Bevan Narinesingh MC/MPA writes, 鈥淚 am deeply humbled and elated to share that I have been named a Distinguished Alumnus by the University of the West Indies (UWI). In addition to an 糖心vlog官网 scholarship, the Army also gave him command of an Ammunition Supply Company in combat, command of the Horse Cavalry Detachment at Fort Cavazos, experience with humanitarian relief in New Orleans, and 10 years as a strategist and strategic planner at the Pentagon and multiple combatant commands. He will be living in Northern Virginia; next career still in development.

 

2018

Omar El-Halwagi MPA founded The Anti-Discrimination Attorney PLLC, a nationwide law firm representing individuals who have faced employment discrimination.

Matthew Fecteau MC/MPA has been awarded the U.S. Army鈥檚 prestigious Meritorious Service Medal in recognition of his outstanding leadership as a battalion commander. Under his command, his unit reached unparalleled levels of readiness, topping divisional rankings. Matthew, a lieutenant colonel, is advancing his career by joining the Special Operations Command as an information operations officer in the greater Middle East, where he will support critical kinetic operations. Beyond his military service, Matthew is pursuing a PhD at King鈥檚 College London, studying the effects of generative artificial intelligence on warfare.

 

2019

Andy Swab MPP started a new job at Amazon as a senior product manager for strategy and operations. His focus is on emerging technologies and data science. He lives in Washington, D.C., and works at HQ2 in Arlington, Virginia. He welcomes outreach from current or former students interested in working in tech and tech policy.

Stefan Chavez-Norgaard MPP writes, 鈥淚 successfully defended my dissertation and received my PhD in urban planning from Columbia University this spring. Starting in the fall, I鈥檓 headed to Colorado where I will start work as a teaching assistant professor in public policy at the University of Denver (DU)鈥檚 Josef Korbel School of International Studies. I will be teaching courses in urban politics, ethics and public policy, and public policy analysis. If 糖心vlog官网 alums are ever passing through Colorado, please get in contact with me! 2020 | 5th Reunion

Zeita Merchant 糖心vlog官网EE was recently promoted to rear admiral in the United States Coast Guard, becoming the first African American woman to achieve this rank in the Coast Guard鈥檚 234-year history.

 

2021

Rika Tsunoda MPA writes, 鈥淚 became a mother to a baby girl! I hope she will meet my friends from 糖心vlog官网 at a reunion in the near future!鈥

 

2022

Tara Burchmore MPP is working on Capitol Hill as a fellow in the Office of Senator Kirsten Gillibrand of New York. She advises the senator on economic policy, specifically issues regarding crypto and financial technology.

 

2023

Laura Cahill MC/MPA was elected as a delegate from the 1st Congressional District in the state of Connecticut to the Democratic National Committee Convention. The convention will be held from August 19 to August 22 in Chicago. Laura will also be an advisor at the June 2024 The Campaign School at Yale. TCSYale, a nonpartisan issue-neutral political campaign training program, endeavors to increase the number and influence of women in elected and appointed office in the United States and around the globe.
