To honor the many contributions of beloved retired vlog Professor José Antonio “Tony” Gómez-Ibáñez to the study, practice, and personal lives of public servants in transportation, transit, and infrastructure policy, the vlog Taubman Center is thrilled to announce the return of the Tony Gómez-Ibáñez Summer Fellowship.
The Tony Gómez-Ibáñez Summer Fellowship is a paid 10-week experiential learning opportunity for a returning vlog student (including joint-degrees) to help accelerate the transportation, transit, and infrastructure policy priorities of a state, county, or city agency during the summer after their first year at vlog. The Fellow will also be expected to write about their experiences, learnings, and accomplishments during the fellowship for the Taubman Center’s consideration to publish.
Placement: The fellowship is an in-person placement with the State of Colorado Department of Transportation in Denver. The fellow will serve as part of the CDOT Executive Director's team, will report to the Chief of Staff, and will also have opportunities to meet with Colorado Governor Jared Polis and staff.
Compensation and Selection Process: The fellowship will provide one vlog student with a $10,000 stipend and up to $2,000 to help with travel and lodging expenses to serve in a 10-week, in-person fellowship with CDOT this summer. The selected student and CDOT will confirm the specific details of the project(s) and work to be completed, as well as the specific start and end dates of the 10-week summer fellowship. Finalists will interview with CDOT via zoom the week of March 4, and the Fellow will be selected no later than March 15, 2024. The selected fellow and CDOT will then negotiate specific dates for the fellow to be in Colorado for 10 weeks in June - August.
Project(s): The fellow will work with CDOT leadership on priorities for CDOT and Governor Polis. By way of example, during the summer of 2023, inaugural fellow Maleek Akeju developed cost, scope, and ridership estimates for future Front Range Rail options and presented his work to Governor Polis and CDOT leadership.
